  • Full-time Barista

    UP Express, Toronto
    Location: UP Express, 7 Station Street, Toronto Application Requirements: We are currently specifically seeking candidates with full-time availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Successful applicants must be available to start immediately. Salary: Minimum wage
    Description
    Balzac’s Coffee Roasters opened in 1996 and now features fourteen locations as well as a wholesale division. Our focus is simple – to serve an exceptional product in a beautiful environment. Each of our locations has been carefully selected for its historic significance and character. Rich in detail and vintage ephemera, Balzac’s Cafes are perfect venues to delve into a good book, catch up with an old friend, or just simply enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and a sweet treat. We are currently seeking a Barista with full-time availability (including evenings, weekends, and holidays), and who is able to start immediately to join the team at our UP Express location. The position reports to the Café Manager. Previous Barista experience is an asset, but we are willing to train. A commitment and passion for customer service is critical.

    Qualifications
    • Barista experience preferred but not required
    • Previous employment in customer service preferred
    • Ability to work in a Team environment
    • Willingness to accept the most effective role
    Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
    • Ability to work standing up for 8 hour shifts.
    • Ability on occasion to lift up to 25lbs. unassisted and carry as required
    • Ability to lift and turn throughout the shift
    • Ability to twist, turn, reach and work above shoulder level.

  • Assistant Coffee Roaster

    Ancaster, ON
    The position reports to the Director of Coffee and works directly with our Lead Roaster.  Previous experience in a similar role is an asset, but we are willing to train. Key responsibilities will include:
    • Assisting the Lead Roaster with loading batches and prepping production bins
    • Ensuring green coffee inventory is organized and follows the requirements for Fair Trade and Organic certifications
    • Vacuuming, sweeping and tidying work areas; perform custodial responsibilities in warehouse and roasting area
    • Roasting batches of coffee to a set profile
    • Mixing coffee to set recipes for blends
    • Maintaining logs and records for traceability and certification purposes
    • Assisting the Lead Roaster in completing daily preventative maintenance
    • Completing daily operational checklists to ensure an organized, safe and clean workspace.
    • Assisting in other warehouse tasks including but not limited to shipping & receiving, production and packaging and general warehouse work.
    • Following all GMP’s and Work Safe Practices while on premises and on shift
    Qualifications and Proven Work Ability:
    • Team player; you’ll be working with a small team in relatively close quarters each day you are on shift
    • A valid G Driver’s License
    • Attention to detail; traceability from raw product to finish product is critical to success
    • High level of comfort with using computers and technology
    • Previous roasting and/or warehouse experience an asset
    • Proven ability to be versatile; a “can do anything” approach
    • Thrives when faced with a challenge; tackles problems quickly yet thoughtfully and is solution oriented.
    • Willingness to accept the most effective role; may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
    Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
    • Ability to work standing up for 8 hour shifts and keep pace in a fast-moving environment
    • Ability to lift 40 lbs. from the ground unassisted and carry as required
    • Ability to lift 66 lbs. (a full bin of roasted coffee) to a height of 1 ft. off the ground and transfer to a cart
    • Ability to pull or push a 66 lbs. bin of roasted coffee 25 ft.
    • Ability to drag 150 lbs. (a full burlap bag of green coffee) a short distance, roughly 5 ft. to 10 ft.
    • Ability to twist, turn, reach and work above shoulder level throughout a shift
    • Ability to grip items such as coffee scoops and label makers for filling orders
    • Ability to operate a pallet jack and physically push/pull large skids of coffee
    • Repetitive movements such as placing stickers precisely on bags for long periods of time
