Introducing Balzac’s Nitro Cold Brew Coffee
June 15, 2015
Two of the original tenants of the Distillery District have once again collaborated to develop and launch a highly anticipated Nitro Cold Brew Coffee. As summer heats up, Balzac’s Coffee Roasters and Mill Street Brewery are tapping into the latest development in coffee culture with this delicious offering. This is the second beverage the two companies have teamed up for, with the award winning Mill Street Coffee Porter using Balzac’s House Blend for over ten years now.
Not to be mistaken for Iced coffee, this alcohol-free beverage borrows heavily from Stout Beer production techniques by steeping a fresh roasted Bolivian and Indonesian coffee blend in large tanks of cold water for several hours and then infusing it with High Pressure Nitrogen. Upon serving, it is charged with additional Nitrogen to give the pour a beautiful cascading effect with a rich and creamy mouth feel, similar to the velvety texture of Mill Street’s Cobblestone Stout.
Delicious with a scoop of Decadent Vanilla Gelato
Truly the champagne of cold coffee, this on-tap serving can be enjoyed any time of year, with or without Ice and condiments. Balzac’s has also added decadent Nitro Cold Brew Floats to the summer menu, featuring vanilla gelato by local craft Gelato maker, Be Good Gelato.
“This drink satisfies a coffee craving in a whole new way,” states Balzac’s owner Diana Olsen, “with such a transformation in the texture and taste from what we are used to in a traditional Iced coffee. I think it will appeal to beer drinkers too…it’s like a reverse effect beer with the buzz factor coming from caffeine rather than alcohol. Many trends in the coffee industry come and go, which is why we have always chosen to stay rooted in the classics, but this is a beverage that we recognized as truly unique and worthy of pursuing. I also love the purity in the ingredients, no additives or sweeteners.”
“We are really excited to continue working with Balzac’s and carry on our collective tradition of innovation by melding their new cold-brew coffee with our brewing expertise to make a product that is truly greater than the sum of its parts,” says Joel Manning, Brewmaster of Mill Street Brewery.
The Nitro Cold Brew ($4.25 for a 12 oz serving) is now available at Balzac’s Coffee Roasters in the Distillery, Port Dalhousie and Guelph and will soon be available in all Balzac’s locations and select Mill Street Pubs. A great new option for bars and cafés to serve to non- drinkers or designated drivers, wholesale is also available.
UPDATE – July 15, 2016: Nitro Cold Brew is now available at all cafés, except Kitchener. Expect Kitchener to start serving Nitro Cold Brew in August 2016. Check social media for updates.Category: Beverages, Blog, News
